Music
The music at Gethsemane during worship on a Sunday morning can be best described as traditional. On most Sundays, we sing 4-5 songs that are accompanied by organ or piano. One Sunday a month, the Living Stones, our praise band, get out their guitars, banjos, and drums and accompany the congregation in singing. On these Sundays, we still have traditional worship with traditional songs, but with a twist.
Message
In the middle of our worship service, a message (sermon) is given. The message is inspired by the Bible readings for the Sunday and tries to connect the Bible to our daily lives. Pastor Paul is our primary preacher though we have guest preachers or a skit or discussion from time to time. Some Sundays, Pastor Paul preaches from the pulpit but he has been known to wander around or just climb a ladder and preach his sermon from there. Our Wednesday Morning Bible Study at 9:30 am is focused on the Bible readings for the coming Sunday. All are invited to attend.
Communion
We believe that Christ is present in bread and wine and is both our host and our meal. We don’t understand how the meal is both body and blood and at the same time bread and wine. It is a mystery. Everyone who confesses Jesus as Lord and Savior is welcome. This is Christ’s table, not ours. He invites all. He promises to give us, in bread and wine, forgiveness of sins past, strength to face life now, and promise of eternal life in the future. We celebrate communion on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays of the month.
Prayers
Several prayers are a part of our worship including a prayer connected to the daily Bible readings and prayers of the people. We pray for the church as a whole, for creation, for nations around the world including our companion congregation in Malawi (in Africa), for those suffering in our congregation and community, and for the ministries of Gethsemane and our community.
Children’s Ministry
During worship, we encourage children to participate in worship including helping ushering, reading, and serving communion. We encourage parents to worship along with their children and have them join in singing hymns, pray the Lord’s Prayer, and follow along with the readings. On most Sundays, we also have a children’s message that is connected to the Bible readings for Sunday and the same readings will be explored more in Sunday School, which is held at 10:15 am on Sunday morning.
Fellowship, Food, and Conversation
We gather together either after the worship service for our fellowship time. Here, we get our caffeine fix, share conversation with one another, and support one another.
What to wear
There is no dress code at Gethsemane so wear what makes you feel comfortable.
